Sometimes a fabric catches your eye and you can picture it in the room straight away. That’s what happened at a recent consultation. The homeowner fell in love with a fabric for one particular room, and I could see why. I’d installed it before, so I could talk her through how it hangs and what it looks like once it’s up across a whole window. It’s one thing to love a sample in your hand. It’s another to feel confident ordering enough of it to furnish a room.
Then we got to the media room. We wanted something with a bit more drama, and we found a black and silver fabric that felt right for the space. It had the depth we were after, and the silver gave it a detail that drew you in for a closer look. I think it’s going to look fantastic once it’s installed.
I’m often asked whether curtains need to match throughout a home. Sometimes one fabric works beautifully across several rooms. Other times, two or more fabrics make sense because you use each room differently. In a living area, you might want to make the most of the daylight. In a bedroom, privacy might be your priority. In a media room, you might want the curtains to help create that feeling you get when the cinema lights go down.
After more than 20 years of working with curtains and blinds, I still enjoy seeing which samples people instinctively reach for. That first choice tells me a lot about what they’d love to live with. My job is to take that idea seriously, share what I’ve learned from seeing fabrics installed, and help them work out where it will shine.
So if you’ve fallen for one fabric and have your eye on something completely different for another room, bring both ideas to your consultation. We’ll look at the light, how you use each space and what you want it to feel like. There’s room for both favourites in the same home.
