Sheer curtains continue to be one of the most popular choices for modern homes — and it’s easy to see why. Soft, flowing fabrics gently filter natural light while still providing privacy, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere in any room. Their simple, timeless look complements both contemporary and classic interiors, making them incredibly versatile. Whether styled on their own or layered with blockout curtains or blinds, sheer curtains add warmth, texture and sophistication to a space while keeping it light, bright and beautifully inviting.

An S Fold or Wave curtain heading provides a simplistic look which is suited to most solid, patterned and sheer fabrics. Through the use of a structured buckram tape, adhered to the back of the header, the material is evenly distributed in a symmetrical Wave formation. The use of wide width fabrics is a great way to achieve a continuous line across a window with no joins or seams, leading to production efficiencies and minimal stitching.
A simple curtain heading with slight fullness that achieves a refined, contemporary look. This style is ideal for solid and sheer designs, or patterned fabrics as there are no pleats to disrupt the pattern repeat. A flat pleat is also a perfect header option for sheers behind a lined curtain on a double track as it sits neatly underneath with little stack-back. Given the casual look of this header style it works perfectly with high quality linens for relaxed elegance.
A pinch pleat offers a classic look. Pleats are achieved through folded creases in the stiff buckram tape, hooks are then inserted allowing the curtain to be hung on a track or rod. There are three varieties of pinch pleat headers characterised by the number of folds/creases at the top (single, double, or triple) as well as the fullness, stack-back, and overall look.
Represented by its small pencil sized pleats, the pencil pleat is a gathered header allowing you to gather the fabric to your desired fullness. The fullness is dependent on the amount you gather with the pull cords and due to the fullness that can be achieved it’s advised to avoid heavy or bulky fabrics as these can disrupt the even distribution of the gathering.
The box pleat is a classic curtain heading style that creates a tailored, elegant look. Deeply inverted pleats run across the top of the drape to create a flat heading style that is designed to sit neatly under a curtain rod or on a track. Creating uniformed folds, a box pleat is suited to most fabrics however thought must be taken when using highly patterned designs, especially geometrics, as the pleating can disrupt the pattern match. A great heading style when using a standard width fabric as joins can be hidden into the fold of the pleat therefore minimising the appearance of unsightly seams.

Custom Features

Sheer curtains include several subtle features that help them hang beautifully and perform well in a space.

Lead-weighted bottom

Many sheers include a small lead weight sewn into the bottom hem. This helps the fabric fall straight, prevents it from floating or twisting, and creates that smooth, elegant drape.

Bottom hem

A neatly finished hem adds weight and structure to the curtain. The depth of the hem can vary depending on the fabric and style, helping the sheers sit evenly along the floor.

Side hems (returns)

The sides of the curtain are carefully stitched to keep the fabric tidy and prevent fraying. Clean side hems also help the curtains stack neatly when opened.

Heading tape / pleating

Special heading tapes are used at the top of the curtain to create styles like S-Fold, pencil pleat or pinch pleat, ensuring consistent folds and smooth operation on the track.

Fullness of fabric

Sheers are usually made with extra fabric fullness (often double the width of the track) so they create soft waves and a luxurious look when hanging.

Custom Hanging

Sheer curtains can be hung in several different ways, depending on the look you want to achieve and how the window space is designed.

They are most commonly hung from curtain tracks mounted to the ceiling or wall, which allows the fabric to fall smoothly and creates a soft, flowing appearance. Ceiling-mounted tracks are especially popular as they give the illusion of height and allow the sheers to run wall-to-wall. Sheers can also be hung from decorative curtain rods, which expose the hardware and suit more traditional interiors.

Because sheer fabrics are lightweight and designed to drape beautifully, custom hanging is important. Correct measurements, track placement, fullness of fabric, and the drop length all affect how the curtains fall. When installed properly, sheer curtains sit evenly, glide smoothly, and create that effortless, elegant look that makes them so popular.
