When it comes to sheer curtains, the beauty is in the detail-and behind every effortless, flowing finish is a surprisingly technical foundation. At MG Curtains and Blinds, we love helping clients understand what goes into creating sheers that don’t just look stunning, but function flawlessly every single day.
Let’s start with the heading. A well-finished hem is essential for both weight and structure. For 90% of my sheers, I finish with a lead-weight hem. We love to do this to help create the s-fold. You will notice a few months after installation that the fabric will form a fabric memory in a beautiful s-fold. It’s a small detail that makes a big visual difference, especially across large windows or open-plan spaces.
Fabric memory is another key factor that many people overlook. High-quality sheer fabrics are designed to “remember” their shape, meaning those elegant folds stay uniform over time rather than falling flat or becoming uneven. This is particularly important in high-use areas like living rooms or sliding doors.
The popular S-fold (also known as S-wave) is the go-to for modern homes, delivering soft, continuous waves that glide seamlessly across your window. This look isn’t accidental-it relies on precise spacing, specialised tape, and the right tracking system to maintain those consistent curves from end to end.
For the heading I run with a clear tape, the 100mm header at the top always looks stunning. This allows for a neat hook on the track with the gliders in the back. We want everything to look neat, with clean lines. We avoid anything bulky ‘grandma’ about the curtains.
Tracking plays a major role in both function and longevity. A premium track system ensures smooth operation, whether you’re opening your sheers daily or simply adjusting them for light control. I work with the slim line 12mm track the slimmest on the market.
Finally, it’s all about customisation. From fabric selection and fullness (how much fabric is used to create those luxurious folds) to precise measurements and installation, every technical element contributes to the final result.
Sheer curtains might look soft and simple-but when done right, they’re a perfect blend of engineering and elegance.
